A local genealogist named David C. Procuniar became interested in the lives of the Old German Baptist Brethren movement from Virginia to Ohio during the turn of the 19th century and in particular the Arnold-Harshbarger families that arrived in the Ohio Valley in 1830. Mr. Procuniar often attended the Old German Baptist Brethren church here in Ohio and chatted with many Brethren about their faith and how their ancestor's lives were affected while shaping parts of the Miami Valley into a Brethren community where they could worship their faith and raise their families among other Old German Baptist Brethren.
After a few years of research Mr. Procuniar, with encouragement from an Old German Baptist Brethren named Daniel Willard Yoder, collected his research notes and put them in a Journal that is available to anyone interested in the Arnold and Harshbarger families of Ohio.
This Journal is the result of his research into the Arnold & Harshbarger families of Wayne Township, Montgomery County Ohio who emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia to Ohio around 1830. He doesn't propose to know all the facts concerning these families but his interest in both the Arnold's and Harshbarger's were of those who were connected to the Arnold Farm located on Shull Road in Wayne Township, Ohio now referred to as “Carriage Hill Farm”. A large portion of his research focused on the family diaries, letters, bibles and oral interviews with descendents of both families. Keep in mind that those preserving records make mistakes from time to time and ones memory gets fuzzy as age sits in; therefore he asks for your forbearance if any mistakes did occur.
Hopefully this journal will excite Arnold and Harshbarger descendents to add to this Arnold - Harshbarger family journey where more of the past will come forth through them and be helpful to anyone studying their family history.
For those of you who are visiting or planning to visit the Arnold Farm for the first time this journal will give you some insight (lots of interesting facts) into the Arnold's and Harshbargers on their life’s journey from 1830 when they traveled by wagon from Virginia to Ohio and purchased this farm, through 1916 when after 85 years of homesteading the Arnold family sold their family homestead.
He wants to acknowledge Daniel Willard Yoder (who has since passed away and is now on his Heavenly Journey) for his wise advice and patience while doing research for this journal and any photos he provided.
